WHAT IS GEMMA?
Erasmus Mundus Master’s Degree in Women's and Gender Studies - GEMMA, is a two-year Postgraduate interdisciplinary study programme that provides high quality education and professional competences for personnel working or intending to work in the areas of Women's Studies, Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities across Europe and beyond. Students benefit from international mobility as they study at two different European universities and obtain a double diploma from the Home and Mobility institutions.
They can also conduct research outside Europe and participate in internships. The GEMMA Master has 44 associated partners, including prestigious universities such as the Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina), Universidad Estatal de Campinas in Sao Paulo (Brazil), Universidad de Chile (Chile), Florida International University (USA), Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Colombia), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Mexico), and Rutgers University (USA).
From 2017 (11th edition), University of Columbia (USA), University of New York (USA), University of Redlands (USA), Cátedra UNESCO de Cultura y Educación para la paz Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (Ecuador), Cátedra de la Mujer at Universidad de la Habana (Cuba) and the Centre for Women’s Studies in Zagreb (Croatia) joined them also as associate partners.
Finally, in 2019, the University of New York (USA) withdraw our extended Consortium, but other prestigious institutions have joined it, such as Goldsmiths College, University of London (United Kingdom) and the United Nations Gender Equality Studies and Training Programme of the University of Iceland, GEMMA‘s first Nordic partner.
WHY STUDY GEMMA?
GEMMA is the first Erasmus Mundus Master´s Degree in Women's and Gender Studies in Europe. It was originally selected by the European Commission in 2006, again in 2011 and in 2017, and for a fourth time in a row in 2019. It is, therefore, a programme of excellence distinguished from amongst 177 submitted project proposals as “a pilot project and model in the field of Women´s Studies and Gender Studies from a European and global perspective”.
At the end of their studies, GEMMA students obtain a double degree, issued by the two institutions where they have conducted their studies.
AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY TO THE PROGRAMME?
Yes, if you have a previous University Bachelor degree (or its equivalent: 180 ECTS, minimum 3 years of study), and speak the languages of the universities where you intend to study (English, Spanish, Italian), depending on the chosen mobility route.
